National test field for the treatment
of historic mine waste

Mining operations and mine waste in Sweden - introduction

Mining has been conducted in Sweden for more than one thousand years. It has been of major economic significance and is still today an important Swedish industry.

Of the ore mined today, approximately 40% is sulphide ore and the rest is iron ore*. The waste from iron ore mining is taken care of and causes no major problems. Leakage from deposits with sulphide-containing material can, however, considerably affect the surrounding environment through acidification and the spread of heavy metals.

The problems differ for old mining areas (-1900) and more modern mines (1900-). With modern mining waste, the enrichment sand is what requires some type of post-treatment, while for historical mining waste, it is rather the large stocks of waste rock, often with high metal contents, that cause problems.

Methods

The methods required for the post-treatment of mining waste rock must be cost-efficient and reactive (pH-raising). Long-term planning is also necessary, requiring measures that will be able to function for thousands of years in the future.

Some examples of reactive material with an alkaline effect that could work include various types of waste products e.g. ash from the burning of biofuels, green liquor sludge and lime sludge from the pulp industry, LKD (filter lime) from lime manufacturing or LD stone from steel manufacturing.

National testing field

At the Ljusnarsbergsfältet field, Bergskraft has access to a cordoned off section that has been adapted for these kinds of material tests on a cubic metre scale. At present, tests are being conducted there of alkaline waste products' suitability for cleaning and stabilising runoff water from waste containing sulphides.

The test field is an important resource for both the testing of material and the development of viable, commercial concepts in cooperation with enterprise, public administration, education and research.
